A Study of Losses

Kompani Giraff

Subtly impressive acrobatics, magic, and object manipulation in a playful and choreographic exploration of the allure of what is lost.

A Study of Losses is a free interpretation of the German author Judith Schalanskys novel ”Verzeichnis einiger Verluste” which, with magical realism, depicts life and history as a series of losses and disappearances. Realms crumble, buildings turn to ruins, cultural artifacts are destroyed, animals face extinction. Most losses remain unknown, precisely because they are lost. We gaze upon what we believe to be history, yet it is essentially a series of temporary preservations in a vast sea of losses.

Four circus artists and an array of forgotten everyday objects awaken in an atmospheric landscape where even objects carry memories, dreams, and phantom pains. The music, specially composed in close collaboration with the American artist Beirut, plays a central role as we are confronted with the question: What have I lost, and what am I afraid to lose?

Together with the ensemble, the three artistic directors of Kompani Giraff — circus artist Viktoria Dalborg, magician Axel Adlercreutz, and fashion designer Sus Soddu — create inventive performances for a young audience. Visual elegance, gentle magic, and clever choreography have become the company’s signature today.

After the performance the 14th of February, the audience is welcomed to a conversation with the director Viktoria Dalborg in the foyer of Elverket.
